The Beliefs That Are Holding You Back From Success

Nearly everything we believe is untrue to an extent. Even scientific discoveries are proven wrong or relative all the time. Everything is subject to change with each new development we experience as a species and as an individual. The only thing that’s constant is change itself.

We formulate our belief systems based on our interactions with life and the people in it. Every time someone tells us something, especially as children, we’re influenced in our opinions of life and how it works. As humans, we like for things to be boxed and defined. It makes us feel safe to have a solid understanding of the world around us.

These boxes and definitive definitions we’ve created lead way to every thought, word and decision we make in life. They form our belief systems and keep us in an illusion of safety. As humans, we greatly enjoy our illusion of safety and our minds will do their best to keep us there.

Our illusion of safety, though, also holds us back from changing and improving our lives. It’s comfortable in our illusion and the unknown is scary, so our minds will construct beliefs to convince us not to move forward into the unknown. These are called false and limiting beliefs.

Recognizing False & Limiting Beliefs

If you want to create a beautiful life that looks drastically different from the one you lead now, you have to learn to recognize these false and limiting beliefs so that you can discard them and replace them with those that are more self serving and beneficial. You have to learn to view everything objectively and relatively, choosing new beliefs with care.

False and limiting beliefs look like:

  • I could never do that

  • That takes a lot of money

  • I need XYZ first

  • I don’t have time

  • It’s too late

  • Only XYZ people can do that

  • Artists don’t make money until they’re dead

  • You have to be born into money to XYZ

  • That’s not a real job

etc.

Whatever your inner voice is telling you is the reason you can’t have what you want is a lie. There is nothing you can’t have and the only real thing standing between it and you is your belief of whether or not you can have it.

Really take the time to explore your beliefs surrounding your desires. Write down what your goals and wishes are for this life and do a brain dump of everything you THINK is holding you back from accomplishing them. Dissect these “limitations”.

Is this a universal truth? (hint: almost nothing is)

Where did you learn this?

Did someone else impose this belief on you?

Does it serve you?

Once you recognize your false and limiting beliefs, you can begin to rework them into something more positive and constructive. You get to choose what you believe in. You can completely rewrite your belief systems to reflect what you want to accomplish in life, and I highly recommend that you do.

Reworking your belief system

Now that you have a list of false and limiting beliefs that are standing between you and your goals, rewrite the belief into something that helps you. For example, turn “I could never do that” into “Maybe I could do that if I worked for it”. Take “I don’t have the time” and turn it into “Maybe I could make the time by learning time management skills and prioritizing things in my life.” Switch “I don’t have the money” into “How can I make the money?”

Rework every belief until you have turned them all into something more positive and serving for you. These are your new affirmations. Pin them up somewhere you can see them often. On your computer desk, fridge or mirror.

Everytime you find a new “Limitation” know that it is only an excuse and do this exercise to rework it. Don’t let your illusion of safety hold you back from having all of the things you want in this life.

Everything lies on a spectrum of truth. Yes we have gravity but the moon does not. Yes you need money to do XYZ but you don’t need it to get started (i.e. research, planning, envisioning). Yes you need time but there is always time to be found. Yes you should have started years ago but it’s not too late unless you’re already dead. Just to name a few examples.

Believing you can is the first step in accomplishing anything. Murphy’s Law states that anything that can happen, will. Once you believe you can do something, it’s just a matter of finding the path to achieving it. In our age of infinite information, the pathways are numerous and opportunities overflow like a fountain of success waiting to be drunk.
